What is a Filling? Redwood Dental Explains

Do you have a filling? Well, don’t feel too badly because you’re not alone.

A whopping 80 percent of people have a filling before they turn 17 years old. Additionally, about four fifths of folks in the U.S. have one or more fillings.

But what exactly is a filling and how does your dentist perform it? Read on to learn more.

Fillings 101

A dental filling is used to fill in holes in the teeth caused by cavities to help prevent decay from spreading. The filling also works to restore your teeth to functional.

Types of fillings include metal and tooth-colored. Metal fillings are either made of amalgam or cast gold. Amalgam fillings are silver fillings that are made of mercury, silver, copper and tin. It is a strong filling and typically not as expensive as other fillings. Cast gold is also strong and long-lasting. However, both tend to stand out as they are not the color of teeth.

On the other hand, tooth-colored fillings are popular because they do, in fact, match the color of your teeth. Three types of tooth-colored fillings are composite, porcelain and glass ionomer. These types of fillings are all long-lasting and strong. Your dentist can help you determine which is right for you.

How is a filling performed?

If you suspect you need a filling, the first step is to get an X-ray. Next, your Redwood Dental dentist will remove any decay prior to performing the filling. Next, your tooth’s surface will be roughed a bit so that the cement is able to bond to the tooth well. And finally, the filling material is applied to the area in layers and shaped to your tooth then polished.

You may experience slight discomfort following your filling, as well as sensitivity to hot or cold food and beverages. This is completely normal. You should take care to brush and floss as you normally would.
